DaVita Stock Gains 55.6% Year to Date: What's Behind the Rally?
Read MoreHide Full Article
Key Takeaways
DaVita stock surged 55.6% this year, driven by improved execution and a stronger treatment-volume outlook.
DVA reaffirmed 2026 guidance midpoints, aided by labor productivity gains and higher revenue per treatment.
DVA's value-based care gains and partnerships aid growth, but insurance-mix and reimbursement risks linger.
DaVita’s (DVA - Free Report) shares have gained 55.6% year to date, outpacing its industry’s 22.2% growth. The rally reflects better operating execution, an improved treatment-volume outlook and growing confidence in value-based kidney care. Clinical innovation and partnerships offer additional potential, while reimbursement and insurance-mix pressures pose risks.
DVA is also scheduled to report third-quarter results on Oct. 29. Although the company is not expected to beat on earnings, EPS estimates reflect 50.6% year-over-year growth on the back of 3.2% sales growth. The robust earnings growth despite mid-single-digit sales growth must have been driven by higher revenue per treatment and improving operating leverage.

Factors Supporting DVA’s Rally
Better Operating Execution and a Stronger Volume Outlook: DaVita generated approximately $6.97 billion in revenues in the first six months of 2026, with adjusted operating income of about $1.06 billion and adjusted EPS of $6.89. The results reflect better execution in treatment volume, revenue per treatment and patient-care costs. Improved labor productivity helped contain costs, while treatment volumes benefited from sustained mortality improvement. Transfers related to Fresenius clinic closures offered additional growth.
Following strong second-quarter results, management reaffirmed guidance midpoints of $2.2 billion and $14.65, respectively, while expecting treatment-volume growth near the upper end of its guided range. A strong outlook and higher volume trajectory are boosting investor confidence.
Value-Based Kidney Care Gains Credibility: In March, DaVita reported a 9% improvement in its Total Quality Score under the Comprehensive Kidney Care Contracting program. Its entities had generated more than $200 million in shared savings since inception and represented 34% of the program’s High Performers Pool despite accounting for 28% of participants. DaVita said it managed more than $5 billion in medical costs under value-based arrangements.
First-half results also suggest progress in Integrated Kidney Care (“IKC”), although timing influenced its contribution. IKC moved from an adjusted operating loss to adjusted operating income over the six-month period. In August, DaVita announced a value-based partnership with Humana to expand care for people with chronic kidney disease. The results and partnership strengthen the case that coordinated care could become a larger contributor beyond the traditional dialysis-center model.
Clinical Innovation and a Broader Care Model: The MOTheR trial found expanded hemodialysis using a medium-cutoff dialyzer was non-inferior to hemodiafiltration on a composite endpoint of all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular events. The approach uses existing dialysis machines, and DaVita said it had secured supplies of an FDA-approved dialyzer for broader rollout. Management expects limited financial impact before a potential mortality benefit emerges, possibly from 2028, but broader access could support clinical differentiation over time.
DaVita also completed a $200 million minority investment in Elara Caring, creating an opportunity to develop dialysis-tailored home-health services. Its October response to the HHS national kidney-care plan reinforced its commitment to innovation, improving access and expanding patient choice. These initiatives strengthen its presence across care settings, although their financial impact has yet to materialize.
Concerns for DVA
DaVita faces pressure from the loss of enhanced ACA subsidies, which is expected to reduce commercial insurance mix and create an estimated $40 million headwind in 2026, with further effects extending into 2027. Lower commercial mix and phosphate-binder revenues are likely to weigh on revenue per treatment. Patient-care costs have also grown more than 3% year over year in the first half. In addition, the proposed Medicare payment update for 2027 was below industry cost trends, leaving reimbursement economics uncertain.
DaVita’s rally reflects improved execution, stronger treatment-volume expectations and evidence that value-based kidney care can deliver clinical and economic benefits. Expanded hemodialysis and new partnerships may widen its role across the kidney-care continuum. However, insurance-mix headwinds, rising costs and Medicare policy could limit earnings leverage. Maintaining this momentum will hinge on translating strategic initiatives into sustainable financial growth.
Glaukos reported second-quarter 2026 EPS of 14 cents, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 50.00%. Revenues of $186 million surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 24.1%.
Glaukos has an estimated earnings growth rate of 268.8% for 2027. GKOS’ earnings surpassed estimates in three of the trailing four quarters and missed once, the average surprise being 25.87%.
Edward Lifesciences reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted EPS of 78 cents, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 6.85%. Revenues of $1.74 billion surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.45%.
Edward Lifesciences has an estimated long-term earnings growth rate of 12.7%. EW’s earnings surpassed estimates in three of the trailing four quarters and missed once, the average surprise being 4.49%.
Globus Medical reported a second-quarter fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS of $1.34, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 19.6%. Revenues of $790 million missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.35%.
Globus Medical has an estimated long-term earnings growth rate of 12.4%. GMED’s earnings surpassed estimates in each of the trailing four quarters, the average surprise being 27.88%.
